John Layman Phone: 605-881-6865
My wife Shari and I moved to South Dakota in 1992 and have enjoyed living in Lake Norden since 1998. We have three children Lance, Holli and Matthew. Shari and I were both born and raised in Missouri, I am originally from Hardin located in northwestern Missouri.
My family has been involved in agriculture for many generations but my grandfathers’ branch of the Layman family is best known for the heavy equipment business that he began several years ago. Growing up I was fortunate because I lived near most of my family including all of my grand parents, my great grandparents and a great-great grandmother. I think that growing up listening to all of the stories that they told probably sparked my life long interest in history and to a lesser extend genealogy. Along with helping on the family farm and working for area farmers I also operated heavy equipment for the family business which helped pay for my college education (and my wife’s engagement ring).
I attended both grade school and high school at Hardin-Central, graduating in 1979. I attended college at Northwest Missouri State University and Central Missouri State University where I received my BS Degree in Vocational Agriculture Education. After college I worked for Ray/Carroll County Grain Growers where I gained experience in the grain handling and feed manufacturing businesses. Later I managed a feed and grain business for Reeds Seeds at Jamesport located in Northwest Missouri continuing to gain experience in feed manufacturing. Following Reeds I went to work for Cargill and specialized in the swine industry, because of this experience I accepted an opportunity to work for J&R Distributing and have been associated with J&R in several capacities since 1992. |
